The role

We need a trainee sawyer and sawmill operative to join us and help support and grow the business. The trainee sawyer will, with development and training, be able to operate our log sawing and resawing equipment and contribute to the effective operations of the mill. Previous experience of sawmilling equipment is not essential, but other relevant transferrable skills, such as working with machinery, and flexibility in a busy working environment and with a small, focused team, will be necessary.

The successful candidate should have some complementary technical abilities, a proven ability to learn, an eye for accuracy and quality and a “can do” attitude.

An ability to work with a wide range of customers, including private individuals, architects, wood and timber-related businesses, is essential. The successful applicant will develop their sawing machinery skills. The role will grow to include maintenance of the saws in a safe condition. Full awareness and adherence of Health and Safety will be required. Full technical and H&S training will also be provided.

Wider responsibilities include helping with log selection, responding to all green beaming orders, being aware of priorities, deadlines and quality requirements and stock control of slabbed timber, as well as sawing furniture grade logs into The postholder will need to be licenced to operate a chainsaw within a workshop environment and to drive forklifts and loaders. Full training will be given for the suitable applicant.

Hours & Pay

This is a full-time permanent position covering 40 hours per week with 20 days annual leave plus eight days of Public Holiday. Paid monthly in arrears, the hourly rate will be between £23k - £27k plus a pension contribution into a qualifying scheme within the meaning of the Pensions Act 2008.

Location

The position is based at Whitney Sawmills, Whitney-on-Wye, Herefordshire, a predominantly hardwood sawmill established for almost 30 years, but owned for the last five by W H Timber Limited, the latter a wholly-owned subsidiary of the charity, Woodland Heritage (number 1041611).
